How Property Tax Works in Spokane County

In Spokane County, property taxes are calculated based on the assessed value of your property and the combined millage (tax) rates set by local taxing districts. Here's how the process works:

  • Assessment: The Spokane County Assessor's Office determines your property's market value as of January 1 each year. This value is based on recent sales of comparable properties.
  • Tax Rates: Your tax bill is calculated by multiplying the assessed value (minus exemptions) by the combined millage rates of local entities like schools, cities, and emergency services. Rates vary by location.
  • Levy Limits: Washington state limits annual property tax increases to 1% unless voters approve additional levies.

Available Exemptions

Spokane County offers several exemptions to reduce taxable value for eligible homeowners:

  • Senior Citizen/Disabled Exemption: Residents aged 61+ or with disabilities may qualify for a reduction in assessed value (income limits apply).
  • Veteran Exemption: Honorably discharged veterans with a service-connected disability (or their surviving spouses) may receive partial exemptions.
  • Homestead Exemption: While Washington doesn't offer a traditional homestead exemption, the Senior Citizen Tax Deferral program allows qualifying seniors to defer payments.

Applications for exemptions must be filed with the Spokane County Assessor's Office by March 31.

Payment Schedule & Deadlines

Spokane County property taxes are due in two installments:

  • First Half: Due by April 30 (or next business day if weekends/holidays).
  • Second Half: Due by October 31.

Late payments incur penalties:

  • 1% interest for payments up to 30 days late.
  • Additional 1% monthly penalty (max 12% per year).

Payment plans are not available, but taxpayers may request a one-time 3-month extension for financial hardship (application required).

Appealing Your Assessment

If you believe your property is overvalued, you can appeal to the Spokane County Board of Equalization:

  • Deadline: Appeals must be filed by July 1 (or within 60 days of the assessment notice, whichever is later).
  • Evidence Required: Provide recent sales data of comparable properties or documentation of assessment errors.
  • Process: File a written appeal with the Board of Equalization. A hearing will be scheduled, and you may present your case in person or via written statement.

For complex cases, consider hiring a property tax consultant or attorney. Note: Appeals do not delay tax payment deadlines.
